2nd grade students in SeƱora Hontz's dual language immersion Spanish class had the opportunity to learn about a cultural celebration: Dia de los Muertos or, Day of the Dead. Contrary to what it sounds like, this is not a sad day! In Mexico and some other Latin American countries, families and friends gather together to celebrate and remember their loved ones who have passed away. Students developed vocabulary with visual supports with SeƱora Hontz to be able to describe who they wanted to celebrate on Dia de los Muertos and why. These second grade Spanish speakers were able to write several full sentences in Spanish. They then shared their writing with the class.
