Mark your calendars! We are THRILLED to welcome the future class of 2036! If your child will be five years old before Aug. 1, 2023, we invite you to Kindergarten Round Up on March 21st. Please attend your home school for the round-up event; if you are unsure which elementary district you live in, please contact one of the school offices for additional information. Kindergarten Round-Up will contain important information about registration, immunizations, school safety, before & after school care, along with the STEM and Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. Registration for all new K-12 families will open immediately following Kindergarten Round-Up. Registration for returning families will open on April 17, 2023. Registration information can be found at www.warsawschools.org/o/warsaw/page/registration1. All incoming kindergarten families interested in DLI must have pre-registration and registration completed by June 1 in order to be entered in the DLI lottery, which is tentatively scheduled for June 7. Warsaw Community Schools (WCS) is excited to share that the Warsaw Area Career Center Cosmetology School was recently licensed as a Beauty Culture School by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. To celebrate, the public is invited to a Community Open House on Tuesday, February 28 from 4:00-7:00pm at the salon, which is located in Lakeview Middle School at 848 E. Smith Street. Visitors are welcome to access the Cosmetology School via Door 5, at the front of Lakeview. Students will be present to provide tours, answer questions, and offer sample hand massages, scalp massages and hair tinsel applications. The school will open to the general public for salon appointments beginning on March 15. During the month of March, appointments will be available from 12:00-3:15 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Grand Opening specials will be offered throughout March as well. This morning, Edgewood Middle School hosted Futures in Manufacturing, an OrthoWorx sponsored event. Abbi Richcreek, Edgewood PLTW teacher, provided over 50 students with an opportunity to see a glimpse in the life of manufacturing. 15 volunteers from a variety of manufacturing companies including Zimmer Biomet, Paragon Medical, Depuy and Medtronic worked with students in small groups on their packaging designs. Afterward, students got to test the designs in action through a variety of experiments. Each year, they put together and perform multiple performances throughout the year. Current and future Lakeview students, here is a unique course option for you to consider! In Mr. Weaver's PLTW Design & Modeling course, students learn how to use modeling software, 3D printers, and other engineering tools to solve problems including ID tags and skimmer cars. If they have spare time, their creations are limited only by their imaginations. The pictured students created spinning top toys, post-it dispensers, Harry Potter wands, jewelry and pencil holders, a game-controller stand, and a mug. Soon, they'll start designing and prototyping the popular wooden puzzle block challenge! PLTW Design & Modeling is a nine-week elective available to 7th and 8th graders, where students learn how to ask questions, generate strong ideas, communicate through sketching, and build and test their prototypes. Miss Jensen, a special education teacher at Jefferson STEM Elementary, has recently started up a student-run coffee shop called “The Happy Bean Coffee Shop.” Students will take teacher orders and create a budget of supplies, along with practicing important social and organizational skills. As part of this experience, the students will use the money to support a kindness project within the building. 25% of the funds raised will go towards supporting a good cause, 25% of the funds will go towards a trip to Light Rail, and 50% will be used to purchase new supplies for the coffee shop. All of the supplies for the initial startup were graciously donated by community donors who responded to the request from Stacey Gagnon on social media. Stacey Gagnon, a Jefferson parent and founder of Trauma Lens Care shared about her son’s involvement in the program, “The Happy Bean Coffee Shop is providing a way for my son to help and assist others. It is something he can do and feel empowered by. “The Happy Beans Coffee Shop is so much more than a way to meet a state standard or curriculum skill. It is providing community and belonging to children who often are overlooked or marginalized. It is providing Israel with a voice and an understanding that he can see a need and make a difference to others." Miss Jensen added, “The skills to be learned from this experience are endless. While the academic skills will be beneficial, I’m also realizing more and more how great this will be for social skills and executive functioning. It’s a fun and unique way for students to not only learn, but to give back to their community.” #WCSmission #kindnessWCS
